're following this hour, slow pace of storm recovery efforts in the northeast. 12 days after sandy, some residents saying they are not receiving any help from fema or even the red cross. with such widespread devastation residents are dealing without basic services. that before the storm they took for granted. >> no water. no heat. no lights, garbage not being picked up. garbage, halfway. garbage thrown everywhere. smell. the environment out here is terrible as far as smelling. odor is horrendous. it's depressing. >> gregg: anna is covering this live at staten island. >> we are 300 yards from the water at one of six dumping stations around staten island. we have been watching this debris pile up for two weeks in the nor'easter that hit last week. it did slow the crews. it's quite an active scene behind me today. a sign of progress being made. that is good sign. also hundreds of volunteers piled into buses at city hall this morning with their own tools and shovels helping out super storm sandy victims. volunteers sorting goods going house to house and cleaning up parks. groups are leaving

to affect areas hit by sandy. trends are off shore. things are looking nice as we approach the holidays next weekend. let's talk about what's happened out there. i mentioned that there was an amazing northern lights show going on. this is a picture from the top of mount washington. one of the highest spots in new england. 6,000 feet in new hampshire. there's a weather observatory where they do 24 hour weather observations and they have these amazing images of the northern lights. it was a great show from michigan all the way through vermont and maine. this image captured it well. as far as what's going on out there, not much. nice quiet weather period across the country. another chilly start in the 30s for many people, even the 40s in the deep south. it's a cold, dry air mass pretty much covering much of the nation. doesn't have a lot of tropical origins to it. it's a polar air mass. the only area of rain that we have is down here in the southeast. it's a pretty good solid shield of light rain, even lightening strikes from georgia into south carolina. now trying to go up to wilmington and ar

with the loss of homes, power and family in the wake of hurricane sandy. the u.s. death toll has risen to 88. 44 in new york state alone and the number continues to grow as many people are still missing. i spent the day on staten island where more have died in new york than anywhere else. some of the worst devastation is here and people told us they're not getting enough help as we visited some of the hardest hit areas with congressman michael brim, searchers discovered the body of two young boys. ageing 2 and 4, in the march. they were swept from their mother's arms. some were hoping for a miracle. there was no one today. >> we've confirmed four bodies. the two children they were looking for, they found the bodies. also in a different location, found an elderly couple. >> at least 19 have been killed on staten island. what we saw was very upsetting today and we are quoing to bring it to you this hour, but first, brian todd. he is on staten island. what are you seeing right now? >> well, we're in the new beach neighborhood of staten island. kind of on the southern and eastern end of the island.
